The New European Bauhaus community and the NEBULA Project

23-05-2023

The New European Bauhaus initiative connects the European Green Deal[1] to our daily lives and living spaces. It calls on all Europeans to imagine and build together a sustainable and inclusive future that is beautiful for our eyes, minds, and souls.

By creating bridges between different backgrounds, cutting across disciplines and building on participation at all levels, the New European Bauhaus inspires a movement to facilitate and steer the transformation of our societies along three inseparable values:

  • sustainability, from climate goals to circularity, zero pollution, and biodiversity
  • aesthetics, quality of experience and style beyond functionality
  • inclusion, from valuing diversity to securing accessibility and affordability

In this context, a New European Bauhaus community[1] has been created in order to create synergies between different projects, provide opportunities for networking and engaging in discussions, peer-learning NEB activities.

The community will provide information on the recent developments, activities of the NEB community members, as well as calls for expression of interest and funding opportunities. Within the community, working sessions will be organized on various topics that are relevant for the community, such as the NEB Compass, participatory approach or NEB Local Chapters.

Hence, the European Affordable Housing Consortium has been invited to take part of this new community, together with the projects: drOp, Prolight, SUPERSHINE, NEBULA, PALIMPSET, HeritACT, Support to New European Bauhaus local initiatives’ and digiNEB.

ECTP, the European Construction, built environment and energy efficient building Technology Platform, is part of one of these projects: NEBULA – New European Bauhaus Unlocked through Built4People-endorsed Local Actions.

NEBULA Project: Connecting Innovation Clusters

The NEBULA[2] project will build upon the New European Bauhaus Unlocked through Built4People partnership (B4P) endorsed Local Actions.

Within Horizon Europe, the Built4People partnership (B4P) aims, among other objectives, to connect to a set of national or regional Innovation Clusters in view of maximizing innovation impacts.

The NEBULA project started in October 2022, has a duration of 30 months and is coordinated by DOWEL Innovation. It builds upon this B4P and the New European Bauhaus initiative to activate and nurture a network of B4P Innovation Clusters, by implementing:

  • Improved visibility, adoption and uptake of innovative solutions that are in line with the New European Bauhaus thanks to increased awareness on benefits from innovation and better access to co-financing
  • Intensified, cross-sectorial and interdisciplinary peer-learning from front runners as well as cross-border cooperation and networking,
  • Preparation for the long-lasting activities of the network of B4P Innovation Clusters and the integration of the next clusters.

This project therefore accompanies a first batch of existing and emerging clusters to increase their maturity along six dimensions (‘success factors’): full value-chain coverage; multi objectives targeting; cross-sectoral integration; combined local and national/EU networking; cross-border interconnections; and access to testbeds and demonstration spaces such as pilot buildings and living labs.

NEBULA supports these clusters through ‘maturity push’ activities including peer learning on New European Bauhaus concepts, support to open innovation, business & finance help desk, match-making and promotional events.

NEBULA consortium, which involves two contractual partners of the B4P partnership (ECTP and WGBC – World Green Building Council), will elaborate a Strategic Replication Plan to reach the contractual target of 10-15 B4P Innovation Clusters by 2028.
